Roughly half the world’s population follows Bible-based religions, made up of 2.1 billion Christians, 1.5 billion Muslims and 14 million Jews (www.pewforum.org). They all claim to believe in the Ten Commandments, so then why are their histories filled with religious separatism and warring and why does it continue? The answer is human selfishness that is largely enabled and sanctified by literalism, which is the love of the literal substance or interpretation of scripture more than the spiritual substance of scripture. Christianity, Islam and Judaism are all built upon the massive lie that scripture is the literal word of God, but scripture teaches the absolute opposite, revealing that literalism is not only dead (the ‘dead letter,’ Romans 7:6), but that it kills the spiritual message (the ‘living spirit,’ Second Corinthians 3:6). See how the Ten Commandments are transformed when we look beyond the literal and into the spiritual substance of the matter.
The First Commandment instructs us to love God before all else, having no other gods. When scripture is interpreted literally, it is easy for religions to assign God to their group over all others. Jews insisting that only they are the “Chosen Ones” are effectively teaching that the God of the Bible is their God. Christians insisting that only they are the “saved” ones are guilty of doing the same thing, teaching that God is their God. Muslims insisting that only they shall have Paradise are also teaching that God is their God. Christianity, Islam and Judaism are infected with this religious separatism because of their select literal interpretations of scripture “fitted” to define God as being exclusively theirs. They all deny that God is the invisible Spirit of Selfless Love that lives and grows within all that live and grow in the Spirit. Their religious separatism would disappear and peace would reign over them if they embraced the spiritual substance of God by LIVING IT.
The Second Commandment is about not making graven or worldly images of things that are of Heaven or of Earth, an instruction to turn away from the worship of idolatrous imagery. Overall, idolatry is when we love something, anything more than the Spirit of God—the Spirit of Selfless or Brotherly Love. The most common idolatry among Bible-based religions is the insistence that only members of a certain religion are “holy” and shall have Heaven and everyone else is “unholy” and shall go to Hell. As long as there are people who love judging themselves to Heaven and everyone else to Hell, the big businesses of selfish or false religion will thrive. It is precisely this holier-than-thou idolatry that is at the heart of the discord and warring between the Abrahamic religions. When people are raised to believe that God is their God and that only they get Heaven then it is no mystery when we see them judging, fearing, blaming, hating, persecuting, brutalizing and even killing outsiders or non-members.
The Third Commandment tells us not to speak God’s name in vain or without worthiness. Those that say “I believe in God” but do not give life to the substance or Spirit of God are those that use His name in vain. It is not by the voice from our mouth that justifies our belief—like saying “I believe in God”—but rather the “voice” from our hearts and motivations (Matthew 15:17-20)—or by actually personifying the Spirit of God.
The Fourth Commandment to honor the Sabbath Day is about pouring out the Spirit of God every day. In the Old Testament, the Sabbath Day is the seventh day, following six days of labor. In the New Testament, Jesus Christ is called the “Lord even of the Sabbath day” (Matthew 12:8) indicating that He is the Lord over every day of the week, even Sabbath Day. Let us examine this further. The name “Jesus Christ” is dead literalism until we know the spiritual definition of that name. “Jesus Christ” by any name is The Way, Truth and Life of God’s Spirit of Selfless Love over human selfishness. Jesus even reveals that the entirety of scripture or “all the law and the prophets” does not boil down to literally believing in Him, the person, but boils down to loving the Spirit of God and applying it (Matthew 22:36-40). Though Judaism and Islam do not believe that the literal person, Jesus Christ, is the Messiah, it is of no consequence ultimately. The spiritual substance of the Fourth Commandment to honor the Sabbath Day is a revelation that, regardless of one’s worldly religion, every day is the Lord’s Day in the lives of those treading the Lord’s Way—The Way, Truth and Life of Selfless Love over Selfishness.
The Fifth Commandment tells us to honor “father and mother” so that we shall have eternal Oneness with God or that we do not “die the death” or be eternally separated from God (eternal damnation; Matthew 15:4). Honoring “father and mother” is not about our physical parents, but about our spiritual Father and Mother—the Male-Female Spirit of God (Genesis 1:27). For more about the masculine/feminine nature of the Spirit of God, please watch my video from January 22, 2010 titled, “Who Is God and What Is His Plan” at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEKHeswJT7Y. Furthermore, if honoring “father and mother” is ultimately about biological parents then Jesus would not have revealed that those who are His “mother” are those that do His Father's Will (Matthew 12:50). Honoring “father and mother” is about putting the invisible or unseen Spirit of the Creator before things seen or created things.
The Sixth Commandment tells us not to kill. While some scholars argue over the word “kill,” this commandment is not firstly about the act of literally killing or murdering, but about not killing the Spirit of Selfless Love within us by denying it. If the world’s Christians, Muslims and Jews stopped killing The Way of Selfless Love with their greater love for selfish, separatist, fearful, superstitious religion then peace would reign among them, naturally.
The Seventh Commandment tells us not to commit adultery. There are two end-all marriages in the Bible. There’s the marriage supper of the Lamb or Oneness with God (‘Heaven’) for those “married to” or bound in companionship with The Way of Selfless Love (‘Lamb’; Revelation 19:9), and then there’s the supper of the great god or separation from God (‘Hell’) for those “married to” or bound in companionship with selfishness (Revelation 19:17). We humans are married or bound to every moment in our lives—to our jobs, friends, experiences, etc. We are to be married to the Spirit of Selfless Love before all worldly marriages. To deny our bond to Selfless Love, instead choosing selfishness is to commit adultery.
The Eighth Commandment tells us not to steal. To take of the Spirit that gives us life without giving life to the Spirit is to “steal” the Spirit.
The Ninth Commandment tells us not to bear false witness, an instruction to be truthful.
The Tenth Commandment tells us not to covet, which is about not building selfish thoughts and desires, as doing so tempts us to give life to those thoughts and desires, actually producing fruits of selfishness.
When we understand the spiritual substance of the Ten Commandments, we see that Commandments Two through Ten are reduced to the First, that is, if we live by the First Commandment we will not break the rest.
How would Judaism, Christianity and Islam developed differently had they embraced the Spirit of Selfless Love over selfish dogma? The Bible tells us that selfish religion is in bed with world politics and that humanity is drunk upon the fruits of this union (Revelation 17:2). If the leaders and nations led by Judaism, Christianity and Islam want peace, truly, then they shall have to REPENT, dropping their corrupted religion for the incorruptible Spirit of their beloved God.
When shall these great religions come to know and embrace the Spirit of the Ten Commandments?
Thank you.
